8 top tips to make your web pages more effective at selling

Get more sales from your web pages by writing effective marketing copy. People rarely read web pages – they scan to save time. Within the first 4-10 seconds your average user has scanned all your information and because of the limitations of time and screen space you need to ensure what you say is what the user wants.

Your headlines need to grab attention, your copy needs to invoke desire and your “calls to action” need  to persuade your visitors to make that sale.

Here are our top tips to make your web pages effective in turning your visitors into customers.

1. Upside down pyramid method. Place all your important information at the top of the page Some visitors may never get to the bottom of your page.

2. Grab attention with well written headlines. Just like turning the pages of a newspaper you need to grab the readers attention with a snappy headline. Use sub headers to keep interest and draw them through the article.

3. Write strong first sentences. A strong first sentence in any paragraph is known as a “lead”. Writing a strong lead and including a reward will pay dividends. Sentences like “Save money by…” and “Earn points with …” hook the reader with benefits.

4. Be active in your sentences. Make the subject perform the action using sentences like “digital cameras give good results” as opposed to “you can get good results from didgital cameras”. Being active is more positive and instills desire in the reader.

5. Focus on the second person. Talking about benefits rather than features using the second person tells the reader what they will get. Empower your reader using “you” and “your” to imply personalistion and ownership benefits. “Your sales will improve…you will improve your golf swing…” etc.

6. Keep it short and write vivdly. People don’t have time to read long winded pages. Use short words and sentences, be informal and use specific nouns and verbs. Don’t make it long winded with flowery adjectives and so on.

7. Forget jargon. Don’t expect your readers to understand the latest jargon for your products ans services. Keep things straightforward and simple.

8. Keep everything above the fold! Remember you have 4-10 seconds to impress your visitor to entice them to stay and make the sale. Make sure all your important information is above the fold – above the area before they have to scroll. Make sure your calls, to action such as buy now, call me now actions are visible – don’t make the visitor have to work to buy your product otherwise the sale is gone.

Your sales will improve with good marketing copy.
